This post is a bridge between finishing my BA in Contemporary Art and Design in May last year and my MA Fine Art work this year. My interest in impermanence and transience has, over the intervening period, lead to a series of experiments exploring repair inspired by both the Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi (which finds a melancholic beauty in the impermanence of things) and Kintsugi which repairs a broken object with gold as it is believed that when something has suffered damage it has a history and becomes more beautiful.
As part of my exploration I produced pieces where the “repairing” was much more about working against the natural “grain” of the material. to create interest and tension. Using or misusing lead from my stained glass work was a theme which was part of this experimental work.
